Hung or hanged?

The usual forms of hang are hang–hung–hung. The regular form hanged survives for one restricted meaning: execution by hanging.

Use hung for objects and ordinary suspension

When something is attached above the ground, use hung for both the past simple and participle. This covers pictures, coats, curtains, lights, signs, and objects suspended from a support.

We hung the picture above the desk.

The picture has hung there for years.

She hung her wet coat by the door.

Clouds hung over the valley.

The same form appears in several figurative or conversational uses:Silence hung in the room, He hung his head, and They hung around after class.

Use hanged for execution

When the verb specifically means putting a person to death by hanging, traditional standard usage uses hanged. This distinction lets the form signal the meaning even before the rest of the sentence is complete.

The historical account says the prisoner was hanged.

The court had sentenced the man to be hanged.

This is a restricted usage note, not a general alternative. Do not usehanged for a painting or coat simply because the sentence is in the past.

Context decides the accepted form

We hanged the lights yesterday.

We hung the lights yesterday.

Do not confuse grammar role with meaning

Both forms can be past simple or past participles. The helping verb does not choose between them; meaning does. Compare They had hung the banner before noon with The prisoner had been hanged before the order arrived. Each is a participle, but only the second has the restricted execution sense.
