Irregular verb

drink

/drɪŋk/

Base
drink
Past simple
drank
Past participle
drunk

Usage

drank is the simple past; drunk only follows have/has/had — used alone, drunk reads as the adjective for intoxicated.

Meaning

  • to take liquid into your mouth and swallow it

Example

She drank a glass of water after the run.

We drank tea while we waited.

He has drunk three cups of coffee already today.

Teaching note

Drink belongs to the vowel-changing drink–drank–drunk group: drank marks simple past and drunk is the participle after have, has, or had.

Common mistake

Avoid ‘She has drank the water’; the presence of has calls for the participle rather than the past form.

Correction: Use ‘She drank the water at lunch’ or ‘She has drunk the water’, depending on whether the time or result is central.
