Irregular verb

see

/siː/

Base
see
Past simple
saw
Past participle
seen

Usage

saw names a single moment; seen only follows have/has/had, as in have seen.

Meaning

  • to notice something with your eyes

Example

We saw a fox near the path.

She saw the message too late.

I have seen this film three times already.

Teaching note

See changes to saw for simple past and seen for the participle. Seen needs an auxiliary in standard English when it functions as the main verb.

Common mistake

Avoid ‘I seen that film last week’; seen cannot stand alone as the simple-past form.

Correction: Write ‘I saw that film last week’ or ‘I have seen that film’; the auxiliary determines which form belongs.
